Vegan Travel Guide: Durham, NC

North Carolina has become one of my favorite places to travel. I was in Durham, NC for the Triangle VegFest. It is a two-day event. Saturday had speakers and a small group of vendors. The speakers included Gene Baur from Farm Sanctuary, JL Fields, Andy Tabar from Compassion Co., John Lewis from Badass Vegan, Leilani Munter the Vegan Race Car Driver, Queenetta Moore and a Sanctuary panel.

Leilani Munter the Vegan Race Car Driver

I got to hear Leilani Munter speak about the documentary "Racing Extinction." She talked about the environmental damage consuming animal products has on the environment.

Denise Blitz from Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, Lenore Bradford from Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge, and Lisa McDonald from Sanctuary Brewing Company

I also got to listen to Denise Blitz from Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, Lenore Bradford from Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge, and Lisa McDonald from Sanctuary Brewing Company speak about how and why they started their animal sanctuaries.

On Sunday, there were more speakers and vendors. I wasn't able to listen to any of the speakers since I was selling clothing and accessories for Grape Cat. I was able to enjoy a meal by Souly Vegan (Info Below). They served me my favorite vegan mac & cheese. I can't wait to go back and visit the restaurant.

Unfortunately, North Carolina is a large pork producer where in some counties pigs outnumber people. Leilani Munter showed the short "On The Road to Duplin County" (Watch the Video Below).

Vegan Options in Durham, NC

Vegetable Sushi with 7pcs Vegetable and Avocado cucumber roll from Vine Sushi Asian Cuisine in Durham, NC

When you travel sometimes it is hard to find an all vegan restaurant, some good options are Japanese, Chinese, and Thai. Vine Sushi had a whole section of veggie rolls plus a beautiful veggie platter (See Picture Above). Ask your server about if there is fish sauce in the dish or if their miso soup contains shrimp, fermented bonito or skipjack tuna fish shavings. If the server doesn't know or can't tell you then skip it.

The Refectory Cafe Durham NC Tofu Scramble Vegan OptionsThe Refectory Cafe had two vegan items on their menu, a Tofu Scramble (See Picture) with tofu, broccoli, red onions, turmeric, and lime which was good and filling especially if you like lemon and turmeric. They also had Vegan Pancakes with coconut milk, organic flour, and cinnamon.

Holy Shiitake Pie from Mellow Mushroom Durham NC Vegan OptionsMellow Mushroom is one of my favorite places for pizza. They use Have a Heart Cheese to replace dairy and they are also very knowledgeable. about veganism. Make sure to tell the server you are vegan and they will make sure that the kitchen doesn't put dairy cheese on your food. Also, check out the pretzels and Tempeh or Tofu Hoagie with your choice of teriyaki tempeh or tofu with onions, mushrooms, green peppers, lettuce and Roma tomatoes. You can also make your own pizza or pick one off the menu. I got the Holy Shiitake Pie (See Picture) with olive oil and garlic base, shiitake, button and portobello mushrooms, caramelized onions, and vegan cheese. Finished with a garlic aioli swirl and a spritz of black truffle oil. Garnished with fresh chives. My favorite is the Veg Out with Mellow red sauce base, spinach, green peppers, mushrooms, onions, black olives and tomatoes without the vegan cheese.
