The Story behind Grape Cat…
The vegan store Grape Cat started out years ago as a small t-shirt company that James (see the man in the picture above) started. James loved Jazz and painting. Inspired by his passions he wanted to create t-shirts designed with Jazz in mind so he started researching up Jazz terminology. One term stood out – Grape Cat. In the day of Jazz if you were a grape cat then you were a person that loved wine. So, appropriately so James made a t-shirt with the grape cat term, a picture of a cat, and the awesome saying of ‘I love wine!’. It was a hit…because who doesn’t love wine?
When it came time to expand the business into vegan apparel (because we try to stick with our passions here – jazz, painting, caring for the planet and the animals) we here just couldn’t shake the awesome name of Grape Cat. Thus, Grape Cat was born!
…Criticism of Grape Cat
Where in the world can you go without a little criticism, right? Well, we’ve experienced our fair share here. Many people were a little ticked that we used the term ‘cat’ in our name because, well, they are carnivores… We laughed and thought to ourselves, aren’t they animals too? Isn’t that what we are fighting for – the equality and peace of all living things? Yeah, that’s what we thought too. Plus, we love wine and cats are pretty cool too so we stuck with our principles and kept the name Grape Cat.
Grape Cat Operations
Grape Cat is a family owned vegan clothing company that is operated by the amazing James and Christine Lucas of Pipersville, Pennsylvania. They’re a hardworking family that strives to share their love of vegan culture with others!
Grape Cat’s Vegan Journey
Grape Cat is a vegan company because that is what James and Christine Lucas are passionate about (one of several passions). Their journey towards adopting a vegan lifestyle started when Christine set out to find alternative ways to decrease and ease her allergic symptoms when her asthma flared up many years ago. In 2008 the family took a trip to Farm Sanctuary, an animal rescue organization that changed their perspective on animals and food opening their family up to a new way of life – a vegan lifestyle.
After that life-changing trip, James and Christine founded the Bucks County Vegan Supper Club and later, they helped co-found the web site fromatovegan.com as a way to help inspire and motivate other people interested in adopting a plant-based lifestyle. Their new venture, Grape Cat, was started “to create a new kind of company that is good for customers, employees, the environment, and animals,” says James Lucas. “We want to have a central place to find high quality, animal-free products that have been vetted by us.”
Grape Cat is Special because…
Grape Cat is special and unique because as a vegan online store that provides vegan apparel and accessories they focus on more than just the business, they are focused on the mission of animal activism, vegan rights, and the sharing of a vegan culture. They understand their customers. As James likes to say, “Our customers are individuals who understand that the current mass-market production of clothing is not sustainable and [Grape Cat is] for those people who want to make sure they’re not buying into companies that exploit animals for profit”.
In addition, Grape Cat likes to give back. 1% of all sales goes towards animal charities, including but not limited to: Our Hen House, Farm Sanctuary, and Woodstock Farm Sanctuary.
Where does Grape Cat Live?
Grape Cat lives in the heart of Buck County, Pennsylvania. Buck County is known for its beautiful countryside, large self-sustaining farms, and strong support for animal rights. It’s a lively community of happy vegans, so it seemed only appropriate that Grape Cat live here too.
More about James Lucas…
James is a graphic designer by trade. So when he’s not working on Grape Cat or spending time with his family he’s off designing. In addition, James also started Doylestown Movie Fans, a fun club that meets once a month to watch movies at the County Theater in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. James is proud to support several nonprofits that support animals and the environment.
More about Christine Lucas…
Christine has worked in the bookselling and publishing industries for nearly 20 years (can’t believe it’s been that long…). She dedicates a lot of her time working on ways to decrease her ecological footprint on the planet as we only have one and believes that Grape Cat helps to spread this important message.
